Social Media Stats By The Numbers

If you don't believe social media has an effect on your business, think again! It doesn't matter whether you're a B2B or a B2C establishment: social media platforms are how people find out about your business and get an impression. Your social media presence has everything to do with whether or not your business will grow aggressively or keep treading water.

The days of finding out about a business by coming across a page in the phone book or being greeted by a newspaper spread are gone. Social media can and will change the face of your business, and it's up to you to put the power of social media engagement into your hands. The days of customers passively looking at your ads in the newspaper are over.

Current Trends and Growth Rates for Social Media

There are currently approximately three billion internet users around the world. That's about 45% of the world's population. Of that three billion, 2.1 billion of them have social media accounts with Facebook at the helm, boasting approximately 1.55 billion active users. The average Facebook user accesses the site at least 15 times a month: no one ever looks at an ad, online or offline, that much!

70% of American adults have at least one social media account, with the average user having at least five different accounts, so social media marketing is something you definitely don't want to ignore if you want engagement which translates into sales.

Social media also doesn't stop and start promoting your business with nice-looking images and catchy copy on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram among others. If making funny, visually pleasing, or helpful videos is your forte, YouTube has approximately one billion active users, and growing a following there is integral for your business. It's the most widely-adopted among B2C operations. Instagram has over 400 million active users and an engagement rate that's four times Facebook's, so if you can create beautiful images people want to share, that's where you need to be.

We haven't even fully scratched the surface for popular and lesser-known social media platforms that have tens and even hundreds of millions of users who use them every day, often multiple times a day. Just think, you could be receiving your own slice of that very lucrative pie!

What Does This Mean for You?

Those days of passively showing ads to potential customers are over. You need to cultivate, then actively engage with, your following on social media channels in order to drive traffic to your site and get sales. You must insert your brand into every aspect of social media as possible, and interact with your followers using your brand voice. But first, you need to identify who makes up your audience so you can position your brand in a way that will reach them, then engage them on a daily basis. This is how you build your brand and your brand's reputation.

If you're B2B, social media is also important because 84% of CEOs and managers with purchasing power base those decisions on what they see on social media. It's a taste of how you interact with the public, after all.

You will also need to prepare for your business to evolve based on the feedback you receive and the analytical data you're presented with once your users warm up to you and become familiar with your products and services.  All you have to do is be willing to adapt as needed so you can take advantage of what's working and ditch the social strategies that, for whatever reason, don't. If you do these things, you will be successful in the wonderful world of social media.
